TESTIMONIALS
"My first session was pre-lockdown and I was a little anxious beforehand. I wanted to meet new people as I am relatively new to the local area. What I enjoy now is that it is a consistent social activity and all the guys who turn up are spot on. It's also a good opportunity to talk about mental health if I ever needed to speak out." - Oliver Ryan
"My first session was back in March time just before the lockdown period. I had seen a post advertising Kick Start FC on Facebook and thought I would give it a try. I have always enjoyed playing football and the guys who turn up are a good laugh I have enjoyed coming to the sessions. It’s also a great way to speak out if you have anything on your mind. I would totally recommend it." - Rob Yates

How do I talk about my mental health?
Putting your feelings into words is sometimes difficult. It’s perfectly normal to be worried that you might say the wrong thing or explain it badly. It’s also natural to feel anxious that your loved one or friend might think your mental health is worse than you might feel it is.
Try not to worry – talking about your mental health is incredibly important when it comes to getting the right support for you and with the right preparation the conversation can be easier than you think it might be. Here are a few tips on how to talk about your mental health.

KICK START FC MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WORKSHOP
At Kick Start FC, we believe that football is more than a game — it’s a powerful platform for bringing people together, starting conversations, and fostering positive change. Our Mental Health Awareness Workshop is designed to give individuals in our local community a deeper understanding of mental health, how it affects us all, and what we can do to support one another.
Mental health awareness is essential because it helps create a community where people feel understood, supported, and empowered to seek help when they need it most. By increasing awareness, we challenge the stigma that often prevents individuals from speaking openly about their experiences, allowing conversations about wellbeing to become as normal as conversations about physical health. When people understand the signs of common mental health challenges — such as stress, anxiety, or depression — they are better equipped to recognise these signs in themselves and others, enabling early intervention and reducing the risk of issues escalating. Awareness also fosters empathy, compassion, and healthier relationships, as it encourages us to consider what others may be going through behind the scenes. Ultimately, promoting mental health awareness strengthens the overall resilience of a community, helping individuals feel less alone and more connected, while encouraging a culture where seeking support is seen not as a weakness but as a positive step toward wellbeing.
Mental health affects every one of us. By increasing awareness and equipping people with the right knowledge and support, we can help build a stronger, healthier, and more connected community. At Kick Start FC, we’re committed to promoting positive wellbeing both on and off the pitch — because when we understand each other better, we thrive together.
Our Mental Health Awareness Workshop is FREE to attend and is open to everyone — players, parents, coaches, local residents, and anyone who wants to better understand mental health or support those around them. With the workshops being delivered in classroom and online, no prior knowledge is needed. Just bring yourself and an open mind.

TOPICS
In our Mental Health Awareness Workshop, delegates will gain a clearer understanding of mental health, learn to recognise key signs and symptoms, explore how stigma affects those who are struggling, and pick up simple stress-management techniques to support their own wellbeing and others.

OPEN CONVERSATIONS
Delegates will also gain the confidence to start open, supportive conversations with anyone showing signs of mental health challenges. They’ll learn practical techniques for approaching these discussions sensitively and understand how to signpost individuals to appropriate sources of help, ensuring they feel heard, supported, and guided toward the right support services.

5 WAYS TO WELLBEING
Delegates will also be introduced to the Five Ways to Wellbeing — simple, evidence-based actions to improve mental health and overall wellbeing. They will learn practical strategies for connecting, being active, taking notice, keeping learning, and giving, helping them build resilience and maintain a positive mindset.
Dates and venues for our upcoming Mental Health Awareness Workshops can be found on our social media pages, where we regularly post updates and announcements. If you have any questions or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to email us — we’re always happy to help and provide guidance on how to get involved.
